Horror in Ludhiana: Dog Bite a Year Ago, Now Entire Family Stricken with Rabies; All 7 Members Referred to PGI

Jagraon/Ludhiana, January 30 (2026): A shocking and terrifying case has come to light from the Jagraon area of Ludhiana. Seven members of the same family have developed severe symptoms of rabies. This incident has caused a stir in the health department, as the spread of a fatal disease like rabies to so many members of one family is extremely rare.

Negligence from a Year Ago
About a year ago, one member of this family living near Sherpur Chowk in Jagraon was bitten by a dog. At that time, the family did not take it seriously and failed to get the anti-rabies vaccine. After the wound healed, they forgot about the incident, but the virus remained dormant in the body.

How the Infection Spread to the Whole Family
Now, a year later, rabies symptoms have appeared in the family head, his wife, three children, and two children of his sister-in-law. Doctors believe the infection likely spread to other family members through the saliva of the person bitten by the dog. When all of them were brought to Jagraon Civil Hospital, they were drooling from the mouth and unable to speak.

Treatment Continues at PGI Chandigarh
Jagraon Civil Hospital's Senior Medical Officer Dr. Gurvinder Kaur said the patients' condition was extremely critical, so they were immediately referred to PGI Chandigarh. All seven members are currently under treatment there. However, questions are being raised against the administration because the patients' names were not registered in the hospital records.

Essential Information to Prevent Rabies

  • If bitten by a dog, cat, or any wild animal, immediately wash the wound with soap and running water for 15 minutes.

  • Whether the wound is small or large, get the rabies vaccine within 24 hours.

  • Avoid home remedies or quack treatments, as rabies has no cure once symptoms appear.
