Date: Saturday, October 18, 2025 | Location: Sirhind, Punjab
A major fire incident occurred early Saturday morning on the Ludhiana–Delhi Garib Rath Express when flames erupted in AC coach number 19 shortly after the train passed Sirhind railway station in Punjab. Preliminary reports suggest the fire was caused by a short circuit. Several passengers sustained injuries while attempting to escape in panic.
The incident took place around 7 a.m., moments after the train crossed Sirhind station. According to eyewitnesses, smoke began billowing from the AC coach, prompting an alert passenger to pull the emergency chain, bringing the train to a sudden halt.
The loco pilot immediately applied emergency brakes, stopping the train on the tracks. However, as thick smoke filled the coach and flames became visible, panic spread among passengers. Many grabbed their belongings and jumped off the train, while others left their luggage behind in the chaos. Several passengers were injured while disembarking in haste, and those in adjoining coaches also evacuated in fear.
Emergency teams from the railway, fire brigade, and local police rushed to the site within minutes and began rescue operations. After an hour-long effort, firefighters successfully brought the blaze under control.
In an official statement, Indian Railways confirmed that the incident involved Train No. 12204 Amritsar–Saharsa Garib Rath Express. Authorities said no fatalities occurred and all passengers were safely evacuated. Injured passengers received on-site first aid, and the affected coach was isolated from the rest of the train.
The Railways further announced that passengers have been shifted to other coaches, and the train will resume its journey toward Delhi after safety checks are completed.
The incident caused temporary disruption in train movement on the Ambala–Ludhiana section, but normal operations were expected to resume shortly.
