BCCI Walks Out of ACC Meeting Over Mohsin Naqvi’s Handling of Asia Cup Trophy
New Delhi, October 1, 2025 – Tensions flared between the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chief Mohsin Naqvi after Indian officials staged a walkout from the ACC’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Tuesday. The dispute centered around the Asia Cup 2025 trophy presentation and the delay in handing over medals and the winning trophy to the Indian team.
According to sources, BCCI representatives, including former treasurer and current representative Ashish Shelar, left the virtual AGM midway after receiving no clear response from Naqvi on when and how the Indian team would officially receive the Asia Cup trophy and medals. India had defeated Pakistan in the tournament final on September 28 in Dubai, but the post-match ceremony sparked controversy.
Trophy Presentation Controversy
During the final, ACC Chairman and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Mohsin Naqvi was expected to present the trophy to the Indian players on stage. However, after some confusion and hesitation, Naqvi left the stage with the trophy and medals instead of handing them to the winning side. This incident has now escalated into a larger dispute.
BCCI officials reportedly confronted Naqvi during the AGM, asking why the trophy and medals had not been delivered. “Shelar reminded members that BCCI Secretary Jay Shah and CEO Devjit Saikia had already written to the ACC about the matter, but no reply had been received, ” a senior BCCI official told The Indian Express.
BCCI Registers Protest
Frustrated by Naqvi’s lack of explanation, both Shelar and BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla staged a walkout in protest. BCCI has since demanded that the trophy and medals be sent to the ACC’s Dubai office, from where the Indian board would collect them.
Adding to the discontent, Indian officials were reportedly upset that in his opening address at the AGM, Naqvi did not congratulate India on winning the Asia Cup title. Instead, he mentioned Nepal’s historic series win against the West Indies.
What Happened in Dubai Final?
India clinched the Asia Cup 2025 title after a hard-fought victory over Pakistan in Dubai. Traditionally, the winning team receives the trophy on stage in front of fans. However, in this case, Naqvi did not proceed with the formal presentation. After a brief wait, he walked off stage carrying the trophy and medals, leaving Indian players and officials confused.
This unusual move has deepened tensions between the BCCI and ACC leadership, with the dispute now spilling over into official meetings.
